  • Our season-opener, His Girl Friday, took its final bow on June 30, while two new productions made their way to the stage: Neva, by acclaimed Chilean playwright Guillermo Calderon, had a special engagement from June 26-30; and Tribes, penned by rising British playwright Nina Raine, began performances on June 25 and celebrated a festive opening night on June 30. Tribes runs through July 21, and you can get your tickets here. Check out our Know Before You Go guide before you head to the theatre!
  • We had a terrific Foodie Friday on June 28! Theatergoers to His Girl Friday, Neva and Tribes arrived at the Playhouse and from 6pm til right before curtains going up enjoyed the delicious offerings from foodtrucks God Save the Cuisine, Puesto and Ms. Patty Melt, in addition to a complimentary microbrew tasting provided by Stone Brewing Company! Mark your calendars for the next few Foodie Fridays on Friday, July 19; Friday; August 2; and Friday, August 16, all beginning at 6pm!
  • In honor of Tribes (everyone belongs to one, in one form or another), we’d also love for you to tweet us the answer to this question: “My tribe is my __________.” Just fill in the blank and tweet us a response: @LJPlayhouse, #Tribes!
  • Lisa Redwine, Advanced Sommelier and La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Inc.’s Director of Restaurants and Beverage Programs, provided a fun demonstration during rehearsal to the cast of Sideways, showing them how to open, pour and taste wine. You can check out Lisa and Sideways playwright Rex Pickett in this month’s issue of Riviera (pg. 76)!
  • Looks like we’ll have to hold on just a little bit longer: the Hands on a Hardbody original Broadway cast recording that had previously been set for digital download in early July and for sale in stores by mid August, is now slated for an August 27 release. With three Tony Award nominations to its name (for Best Score, Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Keith Carradine) and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Keala Settle), we’d like to think the blues, folk, gospel and R&B of this Playhouse-born production is worth the wait!
