Aurelia's Oratorio

Aurélia's Oratorio

February 3 – February 28, 2010

Mandell Weiss Theatre

starring Aurélia Thierrée
created and directed by Victoria Thierrée Chaplin
featuring Jaime Martinez

Behind the red velvet curtain lies Aurélia's topsy-turvy world of tricks and transformations. Dreams come to life in her imaginative world of delight and darkness when everyday activities become enchanting vignettes composed of aerial acrobatics, illusion, magic, vaudeville and dance. Through each episode she turns her universe in reverse and fascinates audiences as "a performer who practically defines the word beguiling." (The San Francisco Chronicle)

Inspired by medieval drawings that depict worlds upside down and inside out, the traditions of music hall, variety and circus, Aurélia Thierrée collaborated with her mother Victoria Thierrée Chaplin to create the international hit Aurélia's Oratorio.

Aurélia Thierrée

Aurélia Thierrée

Aurélia Thierrée has been performing on stage since early childhood. She began her career in her parent’s Le Cirque Imaginaire and Le Cirque Invisible, during which time she learned to combine a developing sense of the surreal with the demands and discipline required. During recent years she has worked with a number of film artists, including Milos Forman, Coline Serreau, and Jacques Baratier. For several years, she toured with The Tiger Lillies in The Tiger Lillies Circus. She has also worked in variety and cabaret in Berlin. Inspired by medieval drawings that depict worlds upside down and inside out, she collaborated with Victoria Thierrée Chaplin to create Aurélia’s Oratorio for the stage.

LA Times Review
"This theater artist earns her astonishment …though a combination of surreal wit and acrobatic grace. Much of the pleasure derives from the mind-boggling logistics of the presentation. Like a magic show, "Aurélia's Oratorio" challenges audiences to figure out its tricks" Read More Review
"With Aurélia's Oratorio, the La Jolla Playhouse is continuing its grand tradition of classic physical art serving text that brought us treasures such as Bill Irwin, the Flying Karamazov Brothers and Victoria Chaplin." Read More

San Francisco Chronicle Review
"A whimsical feat for all…Part nouvelle circus, part vaudeville of illusions, part fantastical free association…The moment [Aurélia] makes her first appearance—one possibly disconnected hand, foot or leg at a time—she has the audience at her intricately inventive mercy…Oratorio is packed with enough delights for a show twice as long…It's like a Christmas stocking stuffed with one gift after another." Bay Area News Group Review
"Top-notch family entertainment…Not only is it tremendously well executed, but the various scenes are performed with a tremendous amount of ability and intense engagement with the audience…An effervescent blend of hilarious innovation and old-fashioned knock-your-socks-off entertainment!" KGO-AM, San Francisco
"A delightful holiday production…A world of wonderment and impossibilities—from illusions, dancing, aerial stunts and puppetry to tricks of physical dexterity…And it's all performed with plenty of great humor while keeping you mesmerized by the cleverness of the talented cast. I've never seen anything quite like it as it combines a bit of circus, magic and comedy in one show and performed at breakneck speed. It's perfect for the whole family, and your little ones will never have an attention deficit—it really moves. Don't miss Aurélia's Oratorio." Read More
