Return to POP Tour 2012 Recipe For Disaster play information![]() Barry Kornhauser PlaywrightBarry Kornhauser is Playwright-in-Residence at the National Historic Landmark Fulton Theatre and a recent recipient of the Chorpenning Cup, honoring “a body of distinguished work by a nationally known writer of outstanding plays for children.” Other accolades include the Helen Hayes Outstanding Play Award (Cyrano), Ivey Award (Reeling), American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) Distinguished Play Award (This Is Not A Pipe Dream), Bonderman Prize (Worlds Apart), Pennsylvania’s first Educational Theatre Award and “Best Practices” honor, and fellowships/grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, TYA/USA, Doris Duke Foundation, Mid-Atlantic Arts and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. His plays have been produced by numerous Tony Award-winning regional theatres, including the Alliance, The Shakespeare Theatre and the Children’s Theatre Company, as well as at Childsplay, the Kennedy Center’s “New Visions/New Voices” program and “One Theatre World” Festivals. The Kennedy Center also commissioned him to author a play based on newlydiscovered children songs by Broadway legend Frank Loesser. In 2008, Barry’s Youtheatre program for at-risk and disabled teens was honored at the White House as one of the nation’s top arts education initiatives; for his work with this ensemble, he received the AATE’s 2011 Youth Theatre Director of the Year Award. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Franklin & Marshall College, Mr. Kornhauser currently sits on the board of TYA/USA and is an AATE State Representative. His secret ingredients for a delicious life: Wife Carol and kids Max, Sam and Ariel. ![]() Deborah Wicks La Puma ComposerDeborah Wicks La Puma's work for adults and children has been seen across the country and the world from the East Room of the White House in Washington DC to California, Hawaii and even Singapore. Her awards include the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award, the Robert M. Golden Award, a National Endowment for the Arts‚ New American Works Grant, two Helen Hayes nominations, two Parent‚ Choice Awards, and an iParenting media award. Her adult works include the lyric opera Dakota Sky, the musical comedy One Bad Apple, the pet-centric cabaret show Petpourri, and a Mexican folk musical based on Shakespeare's "Winter Tale" Perdita. Her works for young audiences include Nobody's Perfect (based on the book by Marlee Matlin) and Chasing George Washington (both premiered and commissioned by the Kennedy Center), Ferdinand The Bull and Looking For Roberto Clemente at Imagination stage, and Einstein Is A Dummy at the Alliance Theatre. Ms La Puma, a Mexican-American, received her MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, her BA from Stanford University, and studied folk music with Alfredo Lopez, musicologist at la Universidad de Baja California. She is a union member of ASCAP and The Dramatist Guild and an active musical director, orchestrator and performer. A selection of her works are published with Dramatic Publishing and represented by the Graham Agency, NY. ![]() David Saar DirectorDavid Saar is Childsplay's Founder and Artistic Director. He has directed and taught for Childsplay since the company was formed in 1977. Among the many productions he has directed for Childsplay, favorites include Still Life with Iris, A Year with Frog and Toad, Pero or the Mystery of the Night, Afternoon of the Elves, Cyrano and, always, the show he is currently working on! David also directed The Origins of Happiness in Latin for Arizona Theatre Company, Charlotte's Web, The Yellow Boat and Tomás and the Library Lady for Seattle Children's Theatre, and The BFG for the Chicago Theatre for Young Audiences. In 1989 he received the Governor's Arts Award for his contributions to the arts in Arizona, in 1991 he was the recipient of the national Winifred Ward Dare to Dream Fellowship, and in 1993 he received the Phoenix Futures Forum Dream Weavers Vision award. In 2002, he received the first Notable Achievement Award from the Herberger College of Fine Arts at ASU. In March 2007, he was awarded the prestigious Thomas DeGaetani Award from the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT). In 2009, he was recognized for outstanding contributions to theatre in Arizona by the National Society of Arts and Letters, and in August 2010, he received the prestigious Medallion Award from The Children's Theatre Foundation to honor artistic excellence and Childsplay's national influence during its 33 year history. |
