La Jolla Playhouse Presents 2014 POP Tour: The Astronaut Farmworker

La Jolla Playhouse Presents

2015 POP Tour
The Astronaut Farmworker

Written by José Cruz González
Directed by Nicholas C. Avila

La Jolla Playhouse is pleased to present its 2015 Performance Outreach Program (POP) Tour, an annual touring production for young people. This year’s show, The Astronaut Farmworker, written by José Cruz González and directed by Nicholas C. Avila, will tour San Diego County elementary schools from February 2 - April 3, 2015. Scroll down to learn more about booking a performance at your school.

There are also four public performances taking place at the Playhouse on February 14 & 15, 2015 at 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm on both days. Tickets are $9 for children and $12 for adults.

The Astronaut Farmworker is a story about a boy who dreamed of reaching the stars. He was from a family of farmworkers; people who harvest the crops we eat, who toil under the hot sun for long hours. And although they were paid very little, his family was rich... with love and dreams. Loosely based on the true story of a NASA astronaut, this is one family’s story of determination and destiny and a boy who set out to achieve the impossible.

Introduced in 1987, the POP Tour travels throughout the county, touring schools, libraries and community centers. Prior to each performance, a Playhouse teaching artist visits each school to engage students in an interactive workshop to explore issues and themes at the core of the play. The Playhouse also provides schools with a standards-based engagement guide that enables educators to integrate the play into their existing curriculum. After each performance, the cast and crew conduct a question and answer session with the audience.

Ideal for students in grades 2 - 5.

Tour Performance Costs:

  • $600 for one performance
  • $850 for two performances*

*Two performances must be on the same day at the same site.
