Know Before You Go - His Girl Friday

His Girl Friday

May 28 – June 30

Adapted by John Guare from The Front Page by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur and the Columbia Pictures film, His Girl Friday. Directed by Christopher Ashley.

Breaking the Story

A major story is brewing in a 1939 Chicago press room when ace reporter Hildy Johnson stops by for one last visit before leaving the newspaper game for good. But when her former editor and ex-husband entices her with the promise of the scoop that could break the story, the lure of fame and rekindled romance prove more than she can resist. Renowned playwright John Guare (Six Degrees of Separation) and Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley (Memphis) team up to deliver a fast-talking comedy that exposes the unsavory politics of tabloid journalism.

Press and Reviews for His Girl Friday

A sharp homage to a Hollywood classic.
> Variety

Multiple-Obie Award-winning playwright John Guare has expanded the furious screwball comedy into a historical/social commentary without our losing out on the knee-slapping.
> The Providence Phoenix

You get the snap, crackle and fizz of the Cary Grant-Rosalind Russell movie, along with the greater texture and sense of place of the original Hecht-MacArthur play. But the abiding bonus this time around is an appeal to that bodily organ, the heart, that the machine-gun repartee ("Take Hitler and stick him on the funny pages") often has bypassed before.
