West Coast Premiere

Ether Dome

July 13 - August 10

By Elizabeth Egloff
Directed by Michael Wilson

Co-production with Alley Theatre, Hartford Stage and Huntington Theatre Company

THE EUPHORIA AND DEVASTATION OF DISCOVERY

When a new treatment promises to eradicate pain, a doctor and his student play out an epic battle between altruism and ambition. Based on the true story of the discovery of ether as an anesthetic in 1846, Ether Dome explores the pain that afflicts humankind, our attempts to find relief and the beginning of healthcare as big business.

"I am so drawn to the big idea at the center of Liz Egloff's new play: that our noble aspirations to alleviate suffering are undone by our innate human failings."
- Artistic Director Christopher Ashley

Funded in part by The Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science & Technology Project

Mandell Weiss Forum

The Mandell Weiss Forum is a 400-seat thrust stage theatre, with audience members surrounding the stage on three sides. It contains a rehearsal hall, two courtyards and an outdoor "lobby." Built with sleek industrial materials and intersecting geometric shapes, it has a long free-standing entry wall with massive reflective smoky-glass panes that generate the illusion of being both within and outside of the partition.
