Five of Fugard’s works have been Tony-nominated for Best Play: Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and The Island (produced in repertory in 1975), A Lesson from Aloes, “Master Harold”…and the boys and Blood Knot.

A resident of Del Mar, Fugard is also an adjunct professor of playwriting, acting and directing in the Department of Theatre and Dance at UC San Diego.

Winner of an Obie Award, Drama Desk Award and two New York Drama Critics Circle Awards, Fugard is best known for his plays opposing the South African system of racial apartheid. During his 2011 acceptance speech for San Diego’s Peacemaker’s Award, he reminisced about a play produced here at the Playhouse, which addressed the problems in his country: “I looked around, and thought, ‘This is the wrong play, the wrong place, the wrong time.’ But the response to My Children! My Africa! in La Jolla was the most incredible I’ve had in 50 years of theater.”

Below is a list of plays that Athol Fugard has written and/or directed at La Jolla Playhouse. The entire Playhouse family congratulates Mr. Fugard on his Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement!
