Tony Award

Memphis has been nominated for eight Tony Awards in 2010 including Best Director of a Musical (Christopher Ashley).

Hockadoo! The Broadway production of Memphis picked up 8 Tony nominations Tuesday, including Best Musical and Best Director for our artistic director Christopher Ashley! We are SO excited here at the Playhouse and so proud of the entire Memphis team. The nominations are:

  • Best Musical
  • Best Director of a Musical (Christopher Ashley)
  • Best Book of a Musical (Joe DiPietro)
  • Best Score (David Bryan)
  • Lead Actor in a Musical (Chad Kimball)
  • Lead Actress in a Musical (Montego Glover)
  • Orchestrations (David Bryan and Daryl Waters)
  • Costume Design for a Musical (Paul Tazewell)

Chris said of the show’s nominations, “It’s such a beautiful feeling of being recognized. It makes you cheer up a bit, actually. You know, these musicals take so long to get to opening night. You have these, like, multi-year journeys, so actually having a group of people say, ‘We think you did a good job,’ is just tremendously meaningful.”

Memphis has now racked up 28 award nominations — a huge amount for any show — and the awards season isn’t over yet. Be sure to tune in to the Tonys on June 13 to find out who wins, and to see a big performance featuring the Memphis cast!
