Hockadoo! Memphis wins 4 Tonys!
It was a rockin’ evening at the Playhouse last night, as Memphis, the musical that played our Weiss Theatre in 2008, won 4 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book and Best Orchestrations. We are so happy for the cast and crew on Broadway, the staff at the Playhouse, and our awesome audiences in La Jolla for giving it the firepower it needed to make it to New York.
This makes the fourth musical that played the Playhouse to go on to win Best Musical at the Tonys: Big River, Thoroughly Modern Millie, the still-playing Jersey Boys and now Memphis. Not a bad track record, and we’re glad that San Diego audiences are the first ones to see these productions. You guys are the reason we get to keep doing such stellar shows.
