UC San Diego and La Jolla Playhouse: Art and Education Uniting

Since its inception, the Playhouse and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) have worked closely together to create an integrated environment for the exciting and nationally visible theatre produced by the Playhouse and the nationally respected theatre training program offered by the Department of Theatre and Dance. The spirit of the relationship has always been one of symbiosis — the Playhouse feeding the university with its extraordinary artists, innovative new works and high production values while the university brings the energy and idealism of its talented students, a world-class faculty and the presence of an intellectual environment to support the cutting edge artistic choices of the Playhouse.

As two legally and financially independent organizations, the Playhouse and UCSD have entered into a succession of formal agreements; the current agreement runs from 2000 to 2050. Under this agreement, the two institutions work together through the sharing of facilities and training of theatre artists. The facilities were constructed by UCSD on campus property. Many generous donors made gifts to the La Jolla Playhouse, which, in turn, provided gifts to UCSD for construction of the facilities. Under the agreement and as the owner of the shared facilities, the University provides utilities and capital maintenance. Construction of the Jacobs Center was fully funded by gifts to the Playhouse from the community; UCSD provided bridge financing at a favorable interest rate to cover immediate costs prior to the completion of confirmed multi-year gifts.

La Jolla Playhouse and UCSD's Department of Theatre and Dance share the use of four theaters: the Mandell Weiss Theatre, the Mandell Weiss Forum, the Forum Studio and the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. A special production calendar outlines the use of each theatre. There are also six rehearsal facilities on the campus, four of which are shared with UCSD. The Playhouse provides residencies for 20-25 UCSD graduate students in acting, directing, design, and stage management and many undergraduate students take advantage of internships in various areas of the theatre. Playhouse artistic, administrative and production staff frequently teach in UCSD's graduate theatre programs and UCSD faculty have been engaged by the Playhouse as actors, directors, designers, stage managers, choreographers and voice and movement coaches.
