Each summer Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse offers an intensive 6-week acting experience for high school students grades 10-12. This program is designed for the serious performer who wants to develop the skills for a career in the professional theatre. Tuition for the six-week program (held June 30 - August 8, 2008) is $1,800.


Each week acting students spend 35 hours in intensive training classes which include:

  • Scene Study and Monologue
  • Voice for the Actor
  • Voice for the Singer
  • Improvisation
  • Movement for the Actor (weekly Master Classes provide one-on-one intensive work with faculty on alignment, breath and relaxation)

Acting students also have the opportunity to work with the many exciting guest artists who are in residence at the Playhouse during the summer season. Past guest artists include: Keith Johnstone, Des McAnuff, Stephen Wadsworth, Francesca Faridany, Doug Wright, Jefferson Mays, Phelim McDermott, playwrights Ken Weitzman and Jeff Hirsch, dialect coach Eva Barnes and fight director Colleen Kelly. Conservatory students attend rehearsals and La Jolla Playhouse productions.

MEET THE CONSERVATORY DIRECTOR

Kim Walsh, M.F.A. has taught acting, voice and Shakespeare throughout the country and abroad during the last twenty years and currently teaches at UCSD, MiraCosta College and La Jolla Playhouse. She has acted professionally in film, television and regional theatre, including the Signature Theatre in New York and locally at La Jolla Playhouse. Kim received degrees in theatre from Emerson College in Boston and her M.F.A. in Acting from UCSD.


HOW TO APPLY
La Jolla Playhouse is interested in applicants who are willing to take risks, want to be part of an ensemble and have an open mind about new ways to approach material. Tuition for the six-week program is $1,800. Application period closed.

The Summer 2008 Conservatory will be held June 30 - August 8, 2008. Scheduled auditions will be held April 5, 12, and 13, 2008. Your monologue should be by a character in your age range and from a published play.
